As a kid I always skipped breakfast. As an adult, never. As an adult during the pandemic? Not much distinction between breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
It’a one continuous meal.
My family was always into food, “foodies”, and I inherited that gene, so did my dogter, Luna. And in these times where there is so much uncertainty, it seems food provides an added comfort even if all else feels upside down. Much like The Stranger Things and The Upside Down.
This morning, as I went to get my cereal, I looked outside to see another grey morning. Its been perpetually grey here it feels for centuries, and although I live in LA, a place where there’s no snow, the scene outside resembles The Handmaid’s Tale. And that’s not because it’s an actual set, but because I see neighbors walk their dogs with masks, with the backdrop of grey clouds.
Overhead, and atmospherically.
It’s in times like these, when it’s hard to know how to find ways to keep energized, or to feel in motion, or just to keep on keepin on to move forward from A to B. If we can just get that one step from A to B, then before we know it we’re at L and 1/2 way there. I always seem to make it to C, then get tired these days and go back to A. But you know what? That’s completely OK. There is no “right” way to get through whatever challenges may be in front, whether a pandemic, a loss, a breakup, being unemployed, getting divorced, there are ways if we just go easy on ourselves to sit in A, and be IN IT. A for ALLOW. Then B to BE where you’re at.
Easiest A, B, C’s… just learned it about 40 decades later..
Here’s the thing, back to the cereal… as I poured it, I felt like a drone on a permanent rinse repeat. Doing the same thing, over and over. I kept thinking of that old Dunkin Donuts commercial; “Time to make the donuts…” while I poured the milk , put it back in the fridge, and opened my laptop to start the day.. But wait, I saw something different I remembered in the fridge.. I went back, opened the door, and there was a little something to make the “cheerios” cheery after all. Pomegranates. Dear friends of mine say that pomegranates are healing to all kinds of things. So, when I saw pomegranates in the aisle? You better believe I bought some, and so it began. I started my day adding something different to the daily routine. And not only was my cereal delicious, it added just the right enough color to my insides, the grey skies outside, and the spoon in my hand.
Got milk? Sure. But even better when it’s pink.
Stay safe all.
